HOFSTED MODEL: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ITALIAN AND COLOMBIAN
COLOMBIA & ITALY
Hello guys! Be welcome to The country of your dreams. Today we're gonna talk about similarities and differences between Italy and Colombia according to The Hofstede model. If you wanna know how different or similar are your country and another one, you can check it here https://www.hofstede-insights.com/product/compare-countries/. The Hofstede model shows you a bar graphic with seven categories that are: power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long term orientation and indulgence. Depending on your puntation in each one of these, you can know what the people are like in that country. After doing our comparative analysis between Italy and Colombian, we obtain the following scores.
POWER DISTANCE:
The 67 scores show us that Colombia is a society that believes in inequalities as a fact of life, we mean, such as that is something normal, for that reason, the inequality is accepted in all society.
On the other hand, with a score of 50, Italy tends to prefer equality, collaboration of powers and decision-making.
We think that this is due to young people in each country, because in Italy, control and supervision are not to the liking of the younger generation, who show a preference for teamwork and an open management style, different from Colombia, that accept that.
INDIVIDUALISM:
With a score of 76, Italy is an individualistic culture, where people can feel lonely even in the middle of a large and busy crowd.
On the other hand, Colombia with a score of 13, tends to be collectivist, because belonging to a group and aligning with the opinion of that group is very important, loyalty also has a great value.
We think that this is so because in Colombia relationships are more important than business and achieving personal goals as in Italy, that the word "friends" has a business connotation only.
MASCULINITY:
64 Scores show that Colombia is a masculine society, highly oriented and driven by success, as Colombians are competitive and status-oriented.
On the other hand, Italy with a 70 score, it is also a masculine society, highly oriented and driven by success.
We believe this is like that, because in both countries children are taught from an early age that competition is good and that success is demonstrated by acquiring things like a beautiful car, a big house, a yacht, and trips to exotic countries.
UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE:
With an 80 score, Colombia has a high score in Avoidance of uncertainty, which means that as a country they are looking for mechanisms to avoid ambiguity, and emotions are expressed openly.
On the other hand, Italy with 75 score also has a high score in Avoidance of uncertainty, which means Italians do not feel comfortable in ambiguous situations, and formality in Italian society is important.
We think this is so because in both countries there is a great deal of detailed planning, and the need to be clear about how to act, especially when interacting with other people, for example with extensive laws and penal codes.
Colombian obtain a 13 score in this category.According to the Hofstede analysis Colombia is normative society, It means that we’re reluctant to change the status quo because people here are so respectful with traditions, in addition, we usually live here and now and we’re seldom safe for the future. On the other hand, italian get a high score of 61, which shows us that people in this country don’t believe in absolute truth because they think that truth depends on the situation. Also italian people can adapt traditions easily and often they are safe for the future.
This shows us a big difference between italian and colombian people, colombians prefer to enjoy the present and frequently forget to save for the future while italians are pragmatics, so they prefer to live good today, but save a little for the next day.
INDULGENCE:
For this category, Italy gets a 30 score and according to the Hofstede model that refers to they are restraint. They think that all their actions are restricted by social norms, they feel to do things for their own pleasure is wrong. That’s completely different with colombians, who obtain a 83 score, this is a high score and means that in Colombia people are indulgent. Colombians are propensive to follow their desires and enjoy their lives and their free time. Also, we have a good attitude towards life and in contrast to Italians, we don’t feel bad for spending money on fun and pleasure.
That explains why Colombians prefer to enjoy the present while Italians prefer to think in the future. And explain why here we have so many holidays. To conclude, we can see that between Italy and Colombia exist so many similarities and just a few differences and that’s amazing. The next time you travel to Italy or Colombia remember that post.
Have a nice week!
Arrivederci, nos pi’!
